BAUSCH & LOMB AND PANCORNEA BASCOM PALMER EYE INSTITUTE SCHOLAR PROGRAM

The Pan-American Cornea Society (PanCornea) is an international society, which has as its mission the promotion of exchange of technical and scientific information among ophthalmologists of the Americas specializing in cornea and diseases of the external eye. To achieve this mission, PanCornea will organize and disseminate specialized information through education, academic events, publications and specialized study groups. Under the sponsorship of Bausch & Lomb, PanCornea has partner with the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, to create a Scholar Research Program that will allow Latin American ophthalmology cornea-oriented fellows to have a unique clinical/research experience at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.

Under the direction of Victor L. Perez, MD, Associate Professor of Ophthalmology Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and Director of the new Ocular Surface Center, the scholar will observe medical and surgical management of a broad spectrum of medical corneal disorders including ocular surface disorders, ocular involvement of autoimmune diseases, microbial keratitis and endophthalmitis. Moreover, the program will have a research educational experience that will expose fellows to research projects that will give them the opportunity to learn the scientific method and use the latest technology in ophthalmic research. Research publications will be required.

Description of the Program

The selected short-term scholar will have a diverse dedicated program inside Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and Ocular Surface Center that will include the following activities:

  • Clinical observership: The scholar will attend cornea and external diseases clinics at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute twice a week, where he/she will be able to observe the evaluation and management of many complex and rare disorders of the anterior segment. Additionally, the scholar will attend the operating room once a week, where he will observe a significant number of surgeries used to treat this conditions including: complex cataract, corneal transplantation, limbal stem cell transplantation, ocular surface reconstructive procedures and keratoprosthesis.

  • Educational research: The scholar is expected to develop a research project under the supervision of Dr. Victor L Perez, related to a focused clinical disease involving the cornea and ocular surface. To accomplish this two full days of research will be dedicated to this, as well and all the research facilities at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and University of Miami Miller School of Medicine will be available as needed. Furthermore, the scholar will attend the McKnight Vision Research weekly research seminars and when appropriate present their results. At the end the scholarship, the participants is required to publish the project in a peer-reviewed journal and presentation at a scientific meeting or American Academy of Ophthalmology. (AAO)

To provide a complete educational activity to the scholar, the program will also require that the participant attends all the educational conferences at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. These include:

  • Cornea Conference: Wednesdays Afternoon
  • Resident / Fellows Morning Conferences: Every morning
  • Ocular Surface Disease Journal Club
  • McKnight Vision Research Lectures
  • The Inter-American Course in Clinical Ophthalmology “El Curso”

Eligibility

  • This is a 6-month clinical research, short-term scholar program for the purpose of observing and training.
  • A short-term scholar is allowed to be in the US as a visitor for a maximum of 6-months and cannot be extended beyond the maximum 6-month duration of the program.
  • Candidates must have completed a residency-training program in ophthalmology before applying for this scholarship.
  • Candidate must be a member of PanCornea.
  • Candidates must live and practice medicine and ophthalmology in Latin America.
